The Church in Microcosm
by Dick Wulf
Did you know that the church of Jesus Christ can be exciting and powerful even when just two or three Christians get together with Him?
- When two or three Christian friends recognize that they are a key component of the larger church.
- When a Christian husband and wife realize their marriage can demonstrate what the Kingdom is like!
- When a Christian family discovers that their home life helps form the very core of Jesus’ church.
Life is richest when we give God what He has asked for in our relationships with friends and family. The New Testament makes it clear that God is far more concerned about how we treat one another than He is with our merely “going to church” without engaging anyone in a significant way. To give more of yourself to His cause, try:
- grabbing lunch together regularly, or
- going fishing more often, and
- acting more like representatives of His church when you do!
The key is living together in God’s Kingdom the way He has asked us to. And, guess what? That can best be done in our Christian friendships, marriages and families.
Our marching orders are found in “The Togethers of Scripture,” some 65 things that God wants us to do when we get together. Most of them cannot be done as thoroughly in the organizational church—or even in small groups or house churches—as they can when two or three people gather in Jesus’ name. So many of the things God has asked us to do for one another in love require a high level of knowledge, commitment and trust. But deeper obedience in our friendships, marriages and families will definitely strengthen the larger church groups we belong to.
Do you realize that living for others, as expressed in the “Togethers,” goes to the very heart of worship? It is giving back to God the thing He most desires, reflecting back to God His own character and holiness. This is worship in depth—worship that reveals His glory through our own words and actions!
So it is true: Three women having lunch, or two men on a fishing trip, or two couples out for a weekend of fun can do a fantastic job of worshiping God … if they remember to obey the “Togethers.”
Come with us on the journey to discover how we can best give God the worshipful obedience He deserves. Learn with us how we can go “further up and further in” to God’s kingdom by actively enhancing our friendships, marriages and families.
