Questions & Answers
Q. If my marriage is part of the church, what activities should my husband and I do together regularly to make that a reality? We don’t feel comfortable praying together.
A. Part of the problem is our often non-participatory experience in the institutional church, which has led us to believe “church” should be easy and comfortable, passively taking in a worship service like theatergoers without relating to one another. That notion of church is not in the Bible.
Another part of the problem is that we treat certain Christian disciplines as exclusive signs of the faith. Prayer is certainly a critical part of the faith, and agreeing with one another in prayer is often essential. But love for one another is also very critical.
In the “Marriage Together with Jesus” cards, you will discover a number of activities you can do together. It will be a wonderful journey, and it will be encouraging to see that praying together is just one of the things God wants you to do together.
Most likely, you have different ways of talking with God. That’s how it should be. When God hears you talking to Him, He wants to hear the words He gave to you. So a couple praying should be praying in two different ways, in different words and style, each bringing to God specific concerns He has placed on your minds and hearts.
Since there is no room for competition in the church, a couple needs to learn to work together rather than against each other. Sometimes your differences will reveal a brand-new solution. If you look through the 65 cards of the “Marriage Together with Jesus” deck, you will be able to pick out those that build teamwork between you. Obeying those Togethers will set you free. It will feel really, really good.
